Athletic Club and Elche finish 1–1 after late equalizer

Athletic creates first-half chances

Athletic Club came close to an early goal when Sancet crossed for Iñaki Williams, who missed from close range. Nico Williams then had a goal disallowed for offside, so Athletic’s first two openings left the game scoreless.

Robert Navarro hit the crossbar, and Yuri struck the side netting as Athletic continued to look for a breakthrough. Despite those chances and the disallowed goal, neither team scored before halftime.

Elche takes the lead

The score changed early in the second half. Valera was fouled, and Buonanotte converted the resulting penalty to put Elche ahead. It was the first goal after Athletic’s first-half chances had come to nothing, leaving the home side needing a reply.

Athletic answers late

Athletic found its equalizer late through a move involving Nico Williams, Berenguer, Chust and Iñaki Williams. The goal brought the teams level after Elche had led from Buonanotte’s penalty. Nico Williams also sent a curling shot toward goal, but Dituro saved it.

A final opening and a draw

Maroan came close to meeting a late cross from close range but could not connect. That chance did not change the result: Athletic Club and Elche finished 1–1 on September 12, with Buonanotte’s penalty and Athletic’s late equalizer providing the game’s goals.
