Athletic Club Beats Atlético Madrid 3–0 After Two Quick Second-Half Goals

First-Half Chances, No Goals

Atlético Madrid nearly scored in the second minute when Kang-in hit Simon’s right post. Athletic Club also threatened, with Sancet shooting into the side-netting. At the other end, Simon saved an effort from Baena. Despite those chances for both sides, the match remained scoreless at halftime.

Athletic made a change after Yeray took a heavy knock, bringing on Paredes in his place. The teams went into the break level, leaving the opening goal to decide which side would take the lead.

Athletic Scores Twice After the Break

Nico Williams broke the tie in the 46th minute, heading in after an Iñaki shot. Athletic added another goal in the 48th minute. Nico and Iñaki combined on a counterattack, and Robert Navarro finished the move. The two goals turned a scoreless match into a 2–0 Athletic lead within minutes of the restart.

Changes and a Late Third

Simeone made four changes together. Athletic then moved to three center backs, with Areso and Johaneko playing wide. Atlético had a chance to reduce the deficit when Julian Alvarez had an effort on goal, but Simon denied him. It was another Atlético chance that ended without a goal.

In the 90th minute, Gerenabarrena delivered the ball into the box. Cardoso cleared it, and Sancet converted the clearance for Athletic’s third goal. Athletic Club finished with a 3–0 win over Atlético Madrid.
