Bayer Leverkusen beats 1. FC Union Berlin 4–0

An opening-minute goal and a two-goal halftime lead

Bayer Leverkusen needed only the opening minute to take the lead against 1. FC Union Berlin on September 5. Gutierrez cut the ball back for Fernandez, who scored the first of Leverkusen’s four goals. Union did not get a shot on target in response.

Leverkusen had another first-half chance when Schick headed a corner against the crossbar. Medina then scored from Gutierrez in the 28th minute to double the lead. Union’s only attempt of the half was a Juranovic shot that was blocked, and Leverkusen went into halftime ahead 2–0.

Schick and Maza add to the lead

Leverkusen scored again soon after halftime. Quansah squared the ball to Schick, who made it 3–0 in the 48th minute. Union’s substitutes included Skarke, Jeong and Haberer.

Schick supplied the pass for Maza in the 66th minute, and Maza curled his finish into the top corner. That gave Schick a goal and an assist in the second half, while Gutierrez had supplied the ball for both first-half scorers.

Leverkusen completes the win

Ronnow made further saves after Maza’s goal. Leverkusen finished with nine shots on target, while Union finished with none. Fernandez, Medina, Schick and Maza were the scorers as Leverkusen completed a 4–0 Bundesliga win.
