Liverpool beat Brentford as Alexander Isak scores 70th-minute winner

Early chances

Brentford forced two early corners before Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister shot over from distance. Michael Kayode combined with Dango Ouattara for another Brentford attempt, with Kayode’s shot deflecting wide off Liverpool’s Jérémy Jacquet.

Bradley Barcola broke clear after a Brentford error in the 20th minute but chipped wide. Liverpool then lost Szoboszlai to injury in the 32nd minute, with Trey Nyoni replacing him.

Brentford scores, then loses Yarmoliuk

In the 43rd minute, VAR overturned Liverpool’s penalty because Ouattara touched the ball when challenging Mac Allister. Liverpool therefore had no penalty to take.

Keane Lewis-Potter put Brentford ahead in the 44th minute, heading Igor Thiago’s cross past Alisson for the opening goal of the match.

Eight minutes into first-half stoppage time, Yehor Yarmoliuk received a straight red after VAR reviewed his headbutting action, leaving Brentford with 10 players.

Changes and an equalizer

At halftime, Brentford replaced Ouattara and Jensen with Kevin Schade and Mamadou Sangaré following the dismissal, making two changes before the second half began.

Victor Muñoz equalized for Liverpool in the 62nd minute. He collected Wirtz’s pass, cut inside and finished with his left foot to bring the visitors level.

Isak scores the winner

Alexander Isak scored the winner in the 70th minute, finishing from Bradley Barcola’s headed knockdown of Alexis Mac Allister’s cross.

Thiago later had a chance to respond for Brentford, but he could not direct Anthony’s low cross toward goal under pressure from Liverpool’s van Dijk.

Brentford lost another player two minutes into second-half stoppage time when Vitaly Janelt received a second yellow for tripping Ngumoha, leaving nine home players.
